Is our perception of reality based on some defined plane of view? Does the sanctioned horizon of vision define our cognitive position? The history of art is the history of changing perspectives, scaling according to the hegemony of the human subject creating images and theories. Composing and structuring created a world of human form reflecting fragments of reality. Hans Belting believes that
‘An image is more than just a product of perception. It arises as a result of personal or collective symbolisation. Everything that appears in the field of vision or before the inner eye can be constituted or transformed into an image on this basis.’
Collective symbolisation is the place we are looking for, the field for incorporating the hypothetical gaze of another. By expanding this field with the available tools and technology, we find another presence, a bio-presence. Rescaling perspectives not only allows us to gain a deeper insight into our surroundings, but more importantly, to radically change the way we see ourselves. Man thus emerges as a ‘machine or device that produces human recognition’ (Agamben), thereby transcending the human into otherness. This transcendence places us in a space that becomes a place of shared experience.
