ALTERNATIVA International Festival of Visual Arts

2010–2015

Alternativa is an art festival, or more precisely, a series of large exhibitions accompanied by a range of accompanying events, which seeks new paths for the idea of art and its social role.

Its concept refers to the city's traditions of political freedom. Alternativa is a cyclical event, with the first edition, Parapetówka, taking place in 2010. In 2011, Work and Leisure and Strangeness. In 2012, Materiality, in 2013, See You Tomorrow! Ideologies of Urban Space and Tactics of Living in the City, in 2014, Everyday Life, and in 2015, Vernacularity.

Alternativa is a kind of festival spread out over time, which served as a platform for the presentation of art and the accumulation and distribution of knowledge. Its location on the renovated first floor of hall B90 opened up the space of this building as a future art museum. Alternativa is an attempt to take a new look at the Gdańsk Shipyard and its heritage, as well as the prospects for the creation of a new district, Młode Miasto. We wanted a new and fresh perspective from the outside to help the new district establish itself as a socially diverse, culturally active area of Gdańsk that would harmoniously blend in with the Main City.
